old news AUGUST 2004 5 ... 4 ... 3 ... 2 ... 1 ... Lift off! Another successful launch from DTL Networx, web host to the stars. This month, it's the web site for Pacific Research Laboratories, Inc. Company president, Dr. Lanny Cornell, a celeb in the undersea world of cetaceans, was the personal physician for Keiko, the killer whale who starred in the movie Free Willy. His standards-compliant web site sports non-Flash animation and some rather heroic Photoshop work to make shot-in-the-garage product photos look more like commercial photography. JULY 2004 Super busy. Super busy. Super busy! Every second I spend here is time not spent on customers or with family (not necessarily in that order, but is all too often the case, I'm afraid). I did my bit for world wide web peace by making another web site Flash-free. Check out Brock Meeks Photography. If the name sounds familiar, Brock is MSNBC.com's chief writer on homeland security issues, and a good friend going back 20+ years now. All the nifty navigation controls and animation were once rendered in Flash and I rewrote them in Javascript. His former site was also limited only to viewing with certain Microsoft IE browsers. Now any modern browser can visit the site without getting this nasty message. MAY 2004 XHTML is really nice. Going forward, I'm doing all my new stuff with it and updating all my old stuff as time permits. After getting fed up with network printing problems with HP printers, I wrote down the solution so I wouldn't forget. MARCH 2004 I'm honored to receive an invitation to be a guest celebrity for a Real Time Chat at A2Central, a cool hangout for Apple II fans past and present. Date: March 27 at 7PM PST. To get access, you need to subscribe. More letters! Large amounts of my work are "under the hood" and rarely seen. That's why I enjoy working on projects that have great graphics, like the web site I produced for Scott Rasmussen. We teamed up to launch Ras Graphics. It's clean, simple, and efficient, as all web site's should be. Read more about it in my DTL March Update. FEBRUARY 2004 According to Berlin officials, I rock. Berlin, the '80s new wave group, is best known for The Metro, No More Words, and Take My Breath Away, the hit theme from Top Gun. In response to promotions on Apple's QuickTime site and VH1's "Bands Reunited" series, Berlin's webmaster, Scott O'Connell, asked me to develop a web database solution for getting the band's concert schedule and huge fan mailing list under control. The Berlin web site now integrates custom PHP scripting and MySQL database services. JANUARY 2004 Must have been many hard drives given as Christmas gifts last month, as my Dual OS Boot pages for FreeBSD and Linux have garnered a lot of email in the last week. Ah! There's nothing quite like a fresh Unix installation to start the year right! Speaking of the new year, this month marks my first year of professional freedom after surviving the depressing post-acquisition world of telecom corporate (mis)management. Having witnessed the decimation of almost ten years of great work at the hands of others, it is wonderful to be innovating and rebuilding once again. My new company, DTL Networx, started about mid-2003 with the same no-fuss, no-fanfare introduction as did CTS Network Services ten years ago and is off to a great start. OCTOBER 2003 Datacom Management launched their bold new web site this month designed by your's truly. If you're offering new network or IP services to technology companies selling to telcos and service providers, give Datacom Management a good look. SEPTEMBER 2003 Emphasizing teamwork, values and responsibility as a means to achieving goals, the U.S. Army's multiplayer Internet game, America's Army: Operations is becoming the hottest combat training simulator. It inspired my son to create the Comrades In Arms community site, his first foray into web design. But keeping track of squad members became difficult, so I built a tracking site for him. Sound like a silly exercise? Think again. It has serious practical applications in computer networking and web-to-desktop integration. Read my technical description. I recently received two interesting letters and thought I should create a letters section. You won't want to miss these letters. These are real letters from real people. If you have an interesting letter you'd like to send me, please do. I would love to include it on the new letters page. AUGUST 2003 This month, studio photography, Photoshop and Illustrator magic, and HTML-smithing produced WORD from the HEART. Patricia is very pleased with the results and the compliments she's getting on her new site. A special "aloha" goes out to my cousin David Russell, sound engineer extraordinaire for Steely Dan who recently released their latest work, Everything Must Go. Here's Dave (on the left) collecting a Grammy for their previous CD, Two Against Nature which won Album of the Year and several other Grammy awards in 2000. Sounds great, Dave! JULY 2003 I'm not the only one who is busy building. See the new web site (and brand identity) I created for All Star Builders. The creative construction geniuses love the ability to drop in photos and captions into the Gallery, and create whole new sections with ease. All Star Builders is building on our strengths. JUNE 2003 Welcome friends, family, and clients! My Internet business process consulting services are now officially in high gear. The brief hiatus after Allegiance Telecom was healthful, energizing and inspiring. I'm extremely excited about getting back to what I do best. There's much to do, clients are starting to queue up, and I've not had this much fun building and creating since the early days at CTSnet! If you're not yet a client, please check out my services to learn more about how I can help your business succeed. MAY 2003 It's May already! So much going on. The CTSnet museum is on stand-by for now (no time to play). 5/14--Allegiance filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. 5/15--I caught tonight's total eclipse of the moon in my astronomy section. MARCH 2003 The Morgan Davis Group Portfolio section is online. Researching those years required digging through Usenet articles, old floppy disks, and installing Macintosh and Apple IIGS emulators on my PC to access all that old work. So much nostalgia! Work now commences on the remaining Portfolio sections, with CTSnet coming up next! Stay tuned. FEBRUARY 2003 Writing is the first Portfolio section now online. Check it out! Work is progressing on the others. JANUARY 2003 After a decade of building and managing a successful ISP, it is time for new ventures. I created this site for prospective business partners and companies in need of my services. If you are serious about exploring new opportunities with me, or want to benefit from my expertise, let's make contact. |
